The founder is Shawn C. Duncan and his interest in mycology led to an interest in mushroom cultivation and the subsequent pursuit of additional education with noted expert and mycological pioneer, Paul Stamets. He became enthusiastic about leveraging the natural capabilities of fungi for environmental remediation in 2003. Soon after that he applied for a sublicense of Steve Aust’s technology for polyaromatic hydrocarbon remediation, with the goal of launching pilot “brown field” projects. However, he quickly discovered that the legal barriers to mycoremediation were substantial and overwhelming. They were, in fact, working to harm the progression of the science and the positive outcomes that fungi is capable of.
This led to the birth of Mycoguild, a global organization dedicated to promotion, facilitation, education and furtherance of mycology. The Mycoguild was founded with the conviction of doing work that leaves a legacy; specifically, creating a safer, cleaner planet for future generations. Mycoguild is a National 5013c non-profit organization, and a project of the National Heritage Foundation.
The Mycoguild has many supporters both amateur and professional and with there help, we will see changes that will lead to a good stewardship of the planet. For that, we thank them all greatly.
